Spotlight a Display for $15

You need to sell more products and your budget is tight.

If your showroom uses drop ceilings, consider enhancing your current overhead lighting with egg crate light diffusers. Good lighting has a positive impact on sales.

Although fluorescent lighting in drop ceilings is cost efficient, the lighting doesn't highlight product well. You can overcome this by purchasing egg crate diffusers to replace the existing flat panel diffusers on one or a few strategically placed lights.

We purchased ours at Home Depot, but most any big box retailer like Menards, Do It Best, Lowes, etc should stock these. These were located in the drop ceiling tile department. Out the door with tax, a 2' x 4' white plastic egg crate diffuser total cost was $13.40.

To install, we simply pulled out the old diffuser and replaced it with the new item. If the new diffuser doesn't fit, it may be necessary to trim it. Use proper safety precautions when cutting these. The egg crate diffusers that the big box retailers handle are 3/8" squares. We wish the 3/8" squares were larger and if you can find diffusers with larger squares, use them. They will focus even more light on your displays.

While you have the diffuser out, check to see if the existing white metal reflector needs cleaned. If your location is more than a few years old, you may be surprised at how much dirt has accumulated on these reflectors. Turn off the power, clean the white metal that surrounds the bulbs with some household cleaner sprayed on paper towels or shop rags and you will be surprised at the result. Don't spray directly on the light fixture and make sure power is off. The entire unit should be dry before turning the power back on. Reflector cleaning can have incredible results in brightening your showroom and the cost is minimal.

Of course, you should replace any burnt out bulbs.

Your last step is to position your displays or merchandisers under the light so you can realize the full benefit of your investment.

We don't recommend using egg crate diffusers in your waiting area. They concentrate too much light on your customers and may create an uncomfortable seating area.
